150 meters southwest of Kongens Nytorv and 50 meters sortheast of the Royal Playhouse you will find the restaurant KOMPASSET (The Compass) - named after its location in Nyhavn, which used to house several manufacturers of compasses. At KOMPASSET our main focus is on smørrebrød/open sandwiches and beer. On the menu you will find a large selection of smørrebrød combined with craft beer from local breweries.

This is one of the places to go if you wanna taste some Danish Smörrebröd. The views here are nice - and it's at the end of Nyhavn, that means your chance to get a nice outside table are a lot higher.

Service was quite fine and the selection of the Smörrebröd pretty good with some interesting combinations.

Staff recommended two sandwiches each. Which is quite a lot. And pricey, since one piece sets you back around 20 bucks! We ordered three pieces for the two of us. And that was quite enough.
We ordered one with cured ham, mayo, potatoes, sweet cornflakes (!) and some greens. The other one was the classic: Herring! And the last one was another people's favorite - the open-faced shrimp sandwich.

Of all three the one with the ham was the best. At first glance a strange combination, but it works. The herring was nice to try. But the preserved fish is just not for everybody, but surely one you must try once.
The shrimp sandwich was a let-down. It was on regular bread only, so little flavours there - and the bread was a bit stale. Shrimps were fresh and ok, but the whole thing lacked flavours. A good diet item I'd say, but nothing to enjoy much.
A good thing: dogs are allowed (outside).

The whole thing is a mixed bag with some clearly good items. But together with the hefty prices I only can give three stars.

This is good Danish open faced sandwich territory. I had three for a very satisfying dinner: herring, avocado & shrimp, smoked salmon. All were very tasty and nicely presented. Lots of interesting beers and some basic wines. Staff were helpful, prompt, nice. Outdoor setting was charming, indoor looked surprisingly elegant. A winner!

Our last night in Copenhagen and we were hoping to find a restaurant with traditional Danish food. Much to our surprise and delight we found Kompasset. It offers traditional Danish food with a modern touch. Our waiter, Dennis was very helpful in making suggestions. They offer a selection of smorgasbord choices and he recommended we order 2-3 each. I chose the chef's chef's choice if 3 different smorgasbords and my sister had 3 of her own choosing. Each of them was served on a thin slice of dark rye bread. My favorite was the curried herring with pickled baby onions and mustard seeds. Dennis was spot on with his beer recommendations for each of us, as well as his recommendations for our aquavit. They have about eight different flavors of aquavit. He graciously explained the customary way of sipping aquavit throughout the meal. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our meal and the decor was modern and fresh. The location is at the lower end of Nyhaven close to the main canal. I recommend this restaurant without any hesitation. Total price in US dollars was (855 DKK; $138 US, which included 6 smorgasbords, 2 beers and 2 glasses of aquavit.

      Variety of smorgasbords.

Very disappointed. An appetizer, a vegan dish of mushrooms and avocado, was not tasty at all, no flavor, part of avocado was rotten. A main dish, fish of the day: when I asked how it would be prepared - the answer was "it will be cooked". Ok. And, a waitress was right. The fish was simply poached and placed on a plate. No seasoning. A few small potatoes were arranged in a circle around. A pea sauce was substituted with crunchy peas scattered around. At last, a dessert, described as vanilla parfait with meringue and strawberries was presented as a slice of overfrozen dried out ice cream with sliced strawberries and no meringue. Oh, and the service: extremely slow to bring dishes but taking your unfinished bottle in no time. A waste of precious time and money.

We were originally going to dine in the restaurant next to Kompasset, but it was packed and we wanted a quiet, romantic dinner on our last night in Copenhagen. So we came out of the cold rain into Kompasset (it's October). We were greeted warmly and our coats taken from us. It was a great start. The decor is clean, inviting and cozy with little nooks filled with comfy cushions and candle lit tables. I wanted to give them 5 stars off the bat, unfortunately the FOOD, yikes. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 sandwiches(smorrebrod), 2 desserts and a beer. Our bill was $118! I did enjoy one of the sandwiches that had shrimp and mayo on it, but not to the extent of the huge price discrepancy of Ikea's shrimp salad, lol. I did enjoy all the visuals, since everything was presented beautifully. Unfortunately, my taste buds wanted to be happy too and I have to say, we ended our meal with desserts that were just plain awful. One of them was a cheesy one(not cheesecake like, but a stinky cheese more suited perhaps for a savory dish?), so sad since the service was excellent and decor beautiful.
