Mercado Central

The Mercado Central or Central Market was a slight walk from the Cruise terminal. It was easy to locate.
The market is quite the experiment with the freshest of meats of the main floor and fish and seafood downstairs. There were aisles and aisles of meat markets selling mainly pork; a staple here, beef, chicken, turkey, goat and innards. In the back were a few pastries and bread.
Downstairs was a menagerie of fish, eels, shrimps, lobsters, rays,
Giant groupers, bonitas, flounders, periwinkle shells and trout. There was even a large sword fish head. Super interesting. Definitely worth the visit!

The Mercado Central is a market place in an older building, quite central. It is located in the Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio, reachable with many busses and the local tram (tranvia), station "Mercado".


The Mercado is devided into two levels. They sell vegatables, fruits, meet, fish, eggs, nuts, bread, sweets and many more articles. The food seems to be very fresh. Vegetarians might have a problem seeing complete fishes, octopuses, anmial heads, etc. The Mercado is not especially cheep, but neither expensive. Extremely convenient is the division into different topics. So you e.g. find all stands mainly selling eggs next to each other what makes it very easy to compare prices and - as far as one is experienced - quality.


But even if you don`t want to buy something, it definitely is worth going in and having a look around. But watch out the opening hours. Often it closes at 2 p.m., as in the afternoon it is very hot (at least in summer), so most people stay at home and shops close. The best time to see a lively market is early in the morning. However, after about noon many stands with fresh food (like those sellling fish) only have a limited number of products left and start cleaning up.
