The folks at the Artisan Roast put on a fab spread for us select few lucky enough to have been invited along to the event. There was cofffee tasting (a bit like wine tasting but you slurp from a spoon. Eye opener), coffee making, cake tasting, cheese and wine. If you ask me, there was just the right amount of educational stuff about coffee and how they do it at Artisan, mixed with just the right amount of food and wine. Although, admittedly, I may have overdone it on the dark chocolate and cherry brownies.
All in all, we all had a lovely evening learning and then whiled away a little longer than we should have done taking advantage of the hospitality and chatting to the staff. We came away buzzing and happy - determined to return to the roast soon. And you know what? We already have.
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of this place. There are so many art galleries in the merchant city/trongate area - that I'd think that this place would have stepped up its game a little.
Inside the place is painted minimalist white - with a minimalist amount of pieces of art work. They seem really bizarrely placed on the walls as well - which didn't really make me want to look at any of the work.
The woman behind the counter, too, seemed a little uncomfortable with me browsing. When I entered the shop she got up from her laptop at the desk and went and stood awkwardly in the centre of the room, pretending to be doing something. A little off putting? Yeah, you could say that...
Okay, guys, seriously. Why did no one tell me that this place existed before? I had to find it all by myself?!
Well, luckily find it I did - and I'll definitely be popping back here in the future. Filled with all manner of gorgeous vintage and retro things; from authentic vintage clothing to retro telephones and 90s toys - this place is a treasure trove for hipsters.
You can generally pick up copies of free fashion magazines like The Coveted in here, which is good to know about, and they even have their own little changing room. (Made out of a vintage curtain, of course).
Brooches, necklaces, bracelets and bangles - I dare you to leave this place empty handed.
Gallery 23 is a really welcoming and inviting art gallery and framing shop on Parnie Street. The owner is really friendly, and will happily have a chat with you. He's happy for you just to browse - which is great.
They have a wide variety of art on offer, varying in both style and price. They even offer small "exhibitions" of individual artists, which brings a great feeling to the place. It's eclectic, stylish and friendly; which is a great mix for an independent gallery!
They've also done some collaborative work with charities to raise funds for some important causes.
I'm going to disagree with the previous two reviews; I like this place! Plus, the door was wide open when I arrived, so no buzzing in involved at all. The lady was perfectly friendly, and was happy for me to just have a browse.
I thought that they had a great selection of paintings - and that the gallery itself was decorated very welcomingly. No art piled up on the floor here - which is a great big benefit in my book.
The art itself is varied in style and price. Pieces range in price from hundreds of pounds to thousands of pounds - so everyone should be able to find a piece they love within their budget.
