Located next to Southeastern Salvage, Essex carries primarily electronics and clothing, with some sporting goods mixed in. This definitely has the feel of a yard sale.
You might be able to find a pretty good deal on some electronics here, but a lot of things are in damaged boxes, and I am not sure I would trust the integrity of the contents.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Anna A.Nashville, USA314252329. nov. 2008
So there are three of these guys, one in Oprymills mall, one on Gallatin in Madison next to Big Lots, and the one on Eugenia. I have never asked where they get their merchandise from but my best guess is that it's overages, returns, and things where the packaging has been damaged.
They receive shipments daily and seem to carry a little bit of everything. The toy selection is pretty neat if you aren't looking for pretty packaging. There are nice strollers, clothes, electronics, appliances, rugs, etc.... I think the pricing is pretty fantastic. Like any kind of bargain establishment, you have to be willing to dig a little and you have to stick with it if there is a particular item you are shopping for.
I love little known treasures that offer value and Essex definitely meets that criteria if you fancy yourself a bargain hunter.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Marcia M.Nashville, USA4614798630815. jul. 2012
Perhaps I was spoiled by the Essex located in Rivergate but this location is the pits...
Every now and then I like to pop into Essex to see if I can score some major deals like I did with my Breville Juicer and since I was in the Thompson Lane area, I decided to venture to this location. Bad. Idea.
Not only is the store dingy and in complete shambles, but the signage on the exterior of the store doesn't even recognize it as an Essex any longer?
The staff didn't greet or assist me at all and I only lasted approximately 10 minutes in here.
Look, I like an incredible deal like the next person but I still expect a standard in my shopping experience.
I won't be coming back to this location. For those of you seeking the deep discounts, head to the Rivergate location instead.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - T H.Nashville, USA520822. dec. 2014
If you like junk, LOVE broken junk, and boxes you have to scan with your scanner to figure what KIND of junk it is, then you are in the right place.
Do you like junk? Stuff spilled in the isles, stuff placed in the isles, leaking liquids, long lines? Then you have hit the jackpot. I didn't find one thing worth breaking out my wallet...and trust me... that is a big deal. I think I may have been over sold on the place.
I shall never return.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nate D. A.Nashville, USA8381555. maj 2014
I really like Essex and here's why... Essex is less expensive than wal-mart, has incredible deals, and is fun to shop at...
I am a veteran and the fact that Essex offers a military discount when I haven't seen ANY OTHER STORE in Nashville that does this... it really means a lot to me because it lets me know they appreciate the sacrifices made.
I go here all the time with my fingers crossed hoping to hit the jackpot on something awesome. I have got jackets, books, protein powder... electronics... they have a lot of different stuff.
I like thrift stores.. and feel like this is like a thrift store just with newer higher quality items.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Libby B.Nashville, USA72742319. feb. 2013
This place feels an awful lot like a thrift shop to me, as far as cleanliness, organization, etc. That said, there are good deals to be had here if you're willing to pick through the mess.
My first trip here I found a Calvin Klein coat for $30 and some Rampage booties for $10 or $15, which are both seriously good deals. On my last visit a friend and I scanned all of her purchases using my Amazon app just to see if she was really getting good deals, and she definitely saved over $50, so the bargains aren't a gimmick. I definitely don't mind coming just for the clothes and shoes.
The store as a whole is pretty sadly neglected. Organization is loose, at best, and as someone else mentioned, in a constant state of picked-over shambles. I usually don't bother with the shelves, because things are so jumbled up you just can't really see anything unless you really hunt. Also the shelf items are often in boxes that are torn or show some other signs of abuse; not that it matters for things like plastic toys, but I'd definitely be wary of buying anything electronic if that's the way all their wares are handled - er, mishandled. I'm pretty sure no one has ever asked if I needed help - I don't even know if they have employees here other than those at the cash register.
I haven't been to the other location, but the other reviews make me want to take a gander at it, just to see!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Paul K.Nashville, USA13072276914. apr. 2011
Their prices are good if they have what you're looking for, which usually they do not when I run by.
I was given a gift of a digital photo frame from them. It had been sitting in a gift box for a month, and being Christmas it was a good nother 2 weeks before I got a chance to power up the thing. I promptly slapped on a few pictures, set it to repeat and it went about its merry way for another little bit at which point it promptly died.
it was past Essex's warranty, but still within the mfg warranty, as long as I had a receipt. Essex was unable to issue reprints of receipts. OK. Finally got enough proof for the manufacturer to take it back 2 months later.
So, had the item not been given as a gift it would have broken in a reasonable return timeframe... had it not been given as a gift I would have had the receipt, etc...
Basically, don't buy someone a gift from here that they're not going to get instantly. Beyond that, it's a pile of things and people and it's picked over heavily and constantly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rex B.Nashville, USA17144. maj 2014
This store feels more like a junk shop sometimes -- poorly organized shelves, stuff is often broken especially the toys. They are supposedly an "overstock" type of store, selling new items that other retailers could not move. However sometimes this stuff looks used, not new.
If however you are willing to rummage you can sometimes get good bargains. I managed to get an exercise bike for $45 that I'd seen selling at $250 other places.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - kristen p.Godley, USA262232712. mar. 2008Først til at anmelde
Essex is one of those places that is hit or miss. They are similar to TJ Maxx or Ross in the way they opperate. This is where all the left over stuff from department stores and other various places ends up. There are lots of electronics but there is also a smattering of clothing and home goods. Not to mention a stable toy isle. You may have to go back a few times to find something really great but eventually you will. My purchases from here include a ($20!) Columbia jacket, an alarm clock, and our "nicer" china.

This place was so darn junky! The business has actually moved from Eugenia Ave to Nolensville Rd. I presume that is the reason for this disarray of merchandise. This was my first and possibly my last visit. I'm not a big fan of having to hunt for purchases. I don't have that much time or interest to fiddle around in discount stores. So if you're into bargain hunting and that's your pride and joy then by all means. Enjoy.
